In Indonesia, everyone is required to declare a religion. For a long time, there were five choices: Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Catholicism, and Buddhism. A few years ago, Chinese religions/ Confucianism was added. And now, the Baha’i religion has been added. Like many other minority groups, the Baha’i have faced much persecution. In 2002, the Indonesian Ulema Council issued a fatwa (edict) that bans Baha’i followers from burying their dead in public areas. There is also a ban on legal Baha’i marriages. Until now, the Baha’i have had to put Islam on their ID card. Now, they no longer have to hide.
Praise God for this step toward religious freedom in Indonesia! Pray for the Indonesian Baha’i to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
