In just a couple of months, Indonesia’s new president Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has already started working on a new law that will give religious freedom to religious minorities. Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim has stated that over the next six months, they plan to propose a law that will protect minorities from attack. The law is also going to make it easier for minority groups to obtain permits to build places of worship. The government also wants to protect atheists, who have never been recognized under the Indonesian Constitution. The biggest change, however, would be to remove the religious affiliation from Indonesian identification cards. This has angered many Muslims and is going to face the most opposition.
Ask God to give the president and the religious affairs minister wisdom as they put this law together. Pray for this law to pass.
