Joko Widodo, otherwise known as “Jokowi” is the favorite in Indonesia’s current presidential campaign. He has named Jusuf Kalla as his running mate. He made the announcement on Monday, May 19. Unlike Jokowi, who was a furniture seller turned politician, Kalla has been in politics for a long time, as he was the vice-president during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s first term. He is also the chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross.
Jokowi is currently the governor of Jakarta, and is extremely popular. He is known for making “unscheduled visits” throughout the capital to have open discussions with the locals about issues that affect them. Jokowi has been popular with Christians because of his choice to have a governor running mate who is a believer, and because he has chosen Christians to have government positions throughout the city. Jokowi/Kalla are going up against Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa. Subianto has been a vice-presidential candidate, but did not win. Rajasa is a close friend of Yudhoyono, the current president. According to the most recent polls, Jokowi has around a twelve percent lead over Subianto.
Pray for God’s will to be done during these elections. Pray for a peaceful election, as some do not like Jokowi.
