Sunni and Shia Muslims in Sampang, Madura, have signed a peace deal allowing the Shiites who have been displaced to return to their villages. The conflict between Sunni and Shia began on August 27, 2012. On that day, dozens of homes were burned, and two people were killed. As a result, 350 Shia Muslims left and took shelter in a gym, where they lived for almost a year. The local government then moved them into apartment buildings. It was at this point that representatives from both sides began a negotiation process to settle the dispute. The result was an eight-point peace treaty, allowing them to return home to their villages.
Continue to pray for the Shi’ite’s safety as they return home, asking that both parties would keep the agreement. Ask that both sides would come to know the love of Christ and be able to live in peace together as brothers and sisters in Christ.
